Take a plunge into the icy waters of the Atlantic Ocean this winter as part of the Annual Long Beach Polar Bears Club Super Bowl Splash, which celebrates 20 years on Feb. 2, 2020.
This is one of the biggest events on Long Beach, with tens of thousands of participants flocking the beachside community and taking on the cold for a good cause.
Started by locals in 1998, the ritual became an official fundraiser in 2000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. It honors the memory of Paulie Bradley, a Long Beach native who died at age 4, before his wish could be granted. The swim is in honor of Paulie. To date, the group has raised over $7 million to grant wishes of children with critical illnesses.
This event is spectacularly popular on the island, drawing New Yorkers from all ends of the state to partake in the wintertime dip. Registration begins at 11 am; the event begins at 12 noon. Participants must complete and submit a waiver to have access to the beach!
If you’d rather watch, you can make a donation online or in-person on the day of the event at the Official Polar Bear Booth at Riverside Boulevard. Afterward, head to Allegria Hotel – the only hotel on the boardwalk and a view of the beach. Watch the event and then grab a seat at our indoor L’Onda Lounge & Bar for a drink.
