Put on Your Wetsuit: Surf Year-Round in the Northeast

Long Beach swarms with tourists in the summer months, but its off-season allure – especially to dedicated surfers – is one of New York’s best-kept secrets. Visitors can find great hotel rates and an unexpected amount of wintertime activities to enjoy.

Looking to get away from the city? You’d be surprised at these two Long Beach winter activities that involve plunging into the cold waters of the Atlantic.

Winter Surf

Summertime in Long Beach brings surfers to the waters, all vying for the best wave. But practiced local surfers swear that Long Beach is actually best surfed in winter, when the swells are epic and you don’t have to share them with others.

Don’t believe us? Check out a live feed of Long Beach from Allegria Hotel to see surfers braving the cold daily, no matter the windchill.

Winter surfing is best for advanced or practiced surfers who are looking to improve their skill. Time out on the water is expectedly shorter, but this dedication is what sets a northeastern surfer apart from those on the west coast.

Experienced surfers can face the cold with a thick, 6/5 mm wetsuit complete with boots and a hood. Browse local surf shops to pick up all the gear you need to take on the cold. Always make sure to surf with a buddy and check out the surf conditions ahead of time.

Long Beach Polar Bear Club’s Annual Plunge

It’s not just the surfers that are in the water during the winter months. Tens of thousands flock to Long Beach for the Super Bowl Splash every year, plunging into the frigid waters for a good cause.

Started by locals in 1998, the wacky ritual became an official fundraiser in 2000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. It honors the memory of Paulie Bradley, a Long Beach native. To date, the group has raised over $6 million for a good cause.

This event is spectacularly popular on the island, drawing New Yorkers from all ends of the state to partake in a wintertime dip. If you want to join, make sure to fill out a waiver ahead of time. If you’d rather watch, consider Allegria Hotel – the only hotel on the boardwalk. Watch the event and then grab a seat at our indoor, heated L’Onda Lounge & Bar for a drink.
